Don Norman, the co-founder of the Nielsen Norman Group, coined the term “user experience”.
UX is an important design principle, whether you are designing a website, animating a logo or creating brand graphics for signage. You should focus on understanding the users deeply, their needs, values, abilities and limitations. Whilst considering business goals and project objectives.
“No product is an island. A product is more than the product. It is a cohesive, integrated set of experiences. Think through all of the stages of a product or service – from initial intentions through final reflections, from the first usage to help, service, and maintenance. Make them all work together seamlessly.”
— Don Norman, inventor of the term “User Experience.”
UX Design
UX Design is often used interchangeably with UI (user interface) Design. However, while UI design has important aspects in UX design, they are subsets of it.
A UX designer is concerned with the whole process of attaining and integrating a product, including aspects of branding, design, usability and function. Starting before a user has experienced it.
“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works” – Steve Jobs
A positive user experience of a product is designed not only considering its consumption but the entire process of acquiring owning and troubleshooting it. Because UX designers will focus on the complete user experience, including emotional experiences such as pleasure and satisfaction. There is no set definition of a good user experience, it is specific to the needs and context where they use the product and how it is interacted with.
“Ease of use may be invisible, but its absence sure isn’t.” — IBM
The designers should also focus on delivering solutions that address pain points and needs. People will not want to use a product that doesn’t serve a purpose. However, UX design is a subjective thing. People will criticize you and your ideas.
“Because every person knows what he likes, every person thinks he is an expert on user interfaces.” — Paul Heckel
UX and UI both share the same finishing goal: to make the user’s interaction as efficient, simple and enjoyable as possible.
UI design concentrates on look and feel, it’s about the point of interaction between the user and an interface. Including designing the interface layout, interactions and elements such as buttons, forms, and anything that the user will interact with, every element needs to be designed.
UI patterns help designers create interfaces that are efficient and save time in coming up with a solution that already exists in the world of UI design. They’re a powerful way to focus on the creative side and let the experience of many others before you work constructively.
Good UX is vital to the success of your business, and UX designers are an integral part of the process. By making the customers’ needs the focus of your design and enlightening yourself about their expectations in order to go above and beyond, you will gain more customers and keep a loyal customer base.
We have discussed the concept of user experience (UX) and its importance in design, regardless of the product being designed. It defines UX as a system that encompasses the entire process of using a product and everything that enables it to function. UX designers focus on understanding users’ needs, values, abilities, and limitations, while also considering business goals and project objectives. While UX design and UI (user interface) design are often used interchangeably, UX is a broader term that includes branding, design, usability, and function. The article also stresses the importance of addressing pain points and needs and delivering emotional experiences such as pleasure and satisfaction.
